Math Centres in our Classroom

I thought it would be nice to share a little bit about how we are tackling math in our classroom. Before coming back, I had been researching new ways to keep everyone in the class engaged during our math time. Inevitably, there will always be students that need a little extra one-on-one, those that need the entire period, and those that finish too fast, which can make programming a bit challenging. I was thinking about how well our Daily 5 works at keeping the kiddos engaged and on task, so why not something similar for math? Well here it is:

The kiddos have 15-20 minutes at each station. M or Math Facts are bins with games and activities that help build up our number sense. Below are some examples of what is included in our math facts bins currently, but these change every few weeks to keep it interesting.

A or At Your Desk are thier math journals that contain a few independent worksheets related directly to what we are learning in class (these will come home at the end of each unit, so that you can take a look). T or Teachers Desk is a small group lesson (4 students) to make sure that the larger lesson taught at the carpet was understood and some games to help reinforce the learning.

Finally, H or Hands On Centres are centres that are related to our unit of study. Below are a couple pictures to give you an idea of what was included for our unit on time. There are 6 of these bins, so if they finish a game/activity they can select another bin. Gone are the days of, "Mrs. Paul, I'm finished! Now what do I do?". All the kiddos are on task, know what they can work on when they are done, I can work with small groups, and we have lots of math practice. So far so good!
